Attendance Policy and Bell Schedule

Bell Schedule

Bell Schedule

When schools have to be delayed because of bad weather, it will be announced on the media about 6:00 am. In such cases, school will start 2 hours later than normal (9:50am). Lunch will be served, but no breakfast. Buses transport students on a delayed basis in the morning and on a regular schedule in the afternoon. There is NO Before school program on abbreviated or cancelled days.

APS sometimes decides later to cancel school for the whole day, so keep listening to the radio. When APS cancels school, the day must be made up at a later time in the year. Make-up days can be found on the Dates to Remember calendar

Emergency conditions that necessitate closing individual schools early will be handled on a school-by-school basis. The principal will keep you informed of the situation.

School starts at 7:50 AM. The tardy bell rings at 7:53 AM.  Students who arrive after 7:53 are considered tardy. Students who are excessively tardy may be referred to the Children’s Court Liaison.

Daily attendance is mandatory if students are to have the full benefit of the instructional program. The school recognizes, however, that there are situations that make absences necessary. Therefore, in accordance with district guidelines, absences may be excused for the following reasons:

  • Doctor’s appointments

  • Illness

  • Death in the family

  • Family emergency

  • Religious commitments

  • Diagnostic testing

Please note that family vacations do not constitute excused absences.

When a student is absent for any reason, it is the responsibility of the parents to call the school attendance line at 890-7375 ext. 2 prior to 8:00 AM on the day of absence. If we do not receive a call prior to 8:00 AM you will be contacted by ParentLINK by phone. We offer this service as part of our Safe School Plan.

After 3 days of unexcused absences, you may receive a phone call from the teacher. After 5 days of unexcused absences, you will receive a phone call from the school counselor to begin an attendance contract. After 10 days of unexcused absences, you will receive a letter from the district along with a possible home visit.  In accordance with district policy and school procedure, students with excessive absences will be referred to the Health/Mental Health Team and an attendance contract will be developed with possible intervention strategies. If your child is out for illness 3 or more days, please provide us with a copy of a doctor’s note for our records.

Students are also required to be at school on time and in line by 7:50 a.m.  They should arrive about 5 minutes before that so they can get to class on time. We will have teachers on playground duty beginning at 7:35 a.m. every day. This allows plenty of time for your student to be on campus before the first bellPlease avoid dropping off your student before 7:35, as there are NO ADULTS ON DUTY.  During inclement weather, students may also wait for school to begin in the cafeteria.  Any student who is not in their classroom by the 7:53 a.m. bell, will need to have a parent sign them in at the front office. Students will be marked absent and will not be allowed to enter their classroom if late, until they are signed in by their parent.
