Fine Arts

In our Fine Arts program, students alternate music and art instruction on a yearly basis. The Fine Arts program for the current school year is music.

Concepts covered include steady beat, rhythm, matching pitch, playing instruments, coordinated movement, reading music and composing. Students will move, listen to and make music with their voices, bodies and a variety of instruments.  Students will make creative choices and perform both alone and with a group.  Students will use critical thinking skills by relating music to other subjects like math, literacy and social studies.

We hope that you will try to incorporate music into your family’s activities.  Some ways to do this include:

• Take your children to performances such as those offered by local middle school and high school music programs. Check the “Venue” section of the Albuquerque Journal on Fridays for concerts/events for kids.
• Talk with your children about music. Get them to identify instruments, sounds, speed and volume of music. Discuss how music makes them feel.
• Listen to a wide variety of music in the car and at home. Try different stations to experience different styles of music, such as KHFM.
• Encourage your child to participate in music activities in and out of school.

It is one of our goals to give everyone an opportunity for success.  Music in the elementary school is very important in developing self-confidence and problem-solving skills, which extend to all subject areas.  Music class also fosters team building and may help your child discover a new area of strength.
